Smells Like Yesterday

I wear chainmail made of iron so that you cannot slash at my chest.

I arm myself with a suggestive nod

Rather than the armor of god

“I must guard my heart”

It’s what I repeat while inking my pages

And looking toward heaven

Wherever that might be.

Difficult to recognize that you are like another person

Or that you can be at all.

You wouldn't understand me

Is what I tend to say

It’s easier to run than to sit

Weird how that works out

Circulation for the brain

My legs move faster than my head

How do we weigh the threats?

Emotion thru flesh

You see vignettes,

Of my life

Apertures & windows

Is it enough to build a nice picture?

Does the light enter right?

I revise my deposition,

Sworn and signed under oath

Because you don't see me and that's okay

The light is too bright,

Exposure set high

Nearly blinding your eyes

Maybe we weren't meant to know each other too well

There’s a silver lining

Flanked your ribs, licked them clean

This concept of changing and leaving

Never applied to me

I'll stay nine forever.
